NEW CONFUSING ELECTIONS PROCESS BLOCKING VOTERS FROM SUPPORTING CASSIDY

Baton Rouge, LA — We have a red alert hours before the election. We are hearing reports that – because of the Jeff Landry election process mess – voters are being disenfranchised and are not able to vote Cassidy. This is not an accident.

Cassidy campaign manager Katie Larkin said:

“It’s not an accident that voters are confused by this intentionally difficult process. The Governor closed the primary and continuously meddled in this election to support Julia Letlow. Right now we are hearing from No Party voters who don’t understand the Landry-created confusing Declaration of Ballot Choice and are being blocked from voting in the U.S. Senate race. It is the media’s responsibility to help educate voters since the state government has deliberately failed to relay critical information about the May 16 election.”

Sen. Cassidy is available to address this mess and has done so in interviews this morning already.

All No Party voters should know that they’ll be filling out this Declaration of Ballot Choice before they are able to vote in the May 16 elections. In order to vote in the U.S. Senate Republican Primary, No Party voters MUST select a Republican Party Ballot. No Party voters who choose a No Party (unaffiliated) ballot will be BLOCKED from voting for U.S. Senate in the May 16th elections. THIS FORM IS NOT ONLINE.

Declaration of Ballot Choice

Here’s what you need to know about the intentionally-created mess that is the Louisiana Senate primary voting process:

Context:

  • Louisiana voters aren’t used to voting in partisan primaries. All Louisiana state and congressional elections have been conducted almost exclusively using a non-partisan jungle primary system since the 70s.

  • State and congressional elections are typically held in the fall, so LA voters aren’t used to voting in the spring.

Intentional Disruption/confusion:

  • Look at the Secretary of State’s webpage on the new process – it bends over backwards to hide critical information about the new system. Instead of leading with critical information about the May 16 election, the SOS leads with the U.S. House races being pushed to the fall and buries the rest.

  • Some offices have primaries, some don’t.

  • This is the second time this cycle that Louisiana elections have been pushed back.

  • This summer, the state dissolved the independent party line. Voters who were registered as independent, automatically became No Party.

  • Only No Party voters must fill out an extra form called a Declaration of Ballot Choice (DBC) before they are able to vote in the May 16 election.

  • The DBC does not indicate which elections are primary elections.

  • Not only is the DBC new – there’s barely any information about it. There isn’t even a link online!

  • Choosing a No Party ballot automatically bars No Party voters from voting in the U.S. Senate election on May 16.
