Baton Rouge, LA - One week in, and Congresswoman Julia Letlow's Senate campaign isn't sparking excitement with conservative influencers. Instead it's sparking eye rolls and questions of her moderate record. Conservative voices online are already blasting Letlow as a weak, "watered-down Republican" candidate with a thin record and no real conservative wins. Here's what conservative influencers locally and nationally are saying:
The Hayride: "Nathan's opinion of Letlow is that she's a RINO, and he comes about that opinion based on the fact that her scorecard numbers particularly in the 2023-24 congressional term, were pretty terrible."
Louisiana Radio Network: Advocate newspaper columnist Tyler Bridges says this will be Letlow's first tough political race. "Julia Letlow has never run a tough campaign. She's not run statewide. She's untested, and she hasn't raised the money yet."
La Politics: Derek Babcock, who was reelected this weekend to another two-year term as state GOP chair, says the president's endorsement of Letlow has not led to a groundswell of Republicans asking the party to issue a similar endorsement.
Bernie Pinsonat, a veteran pollster and political consultant to Nola.com: "I'm guessing only a third of Louisiana knows who she is. She has to spend money to get know in Louisiana and to make the case why she should be elected. [Senator Cassidy's] sitting with lots and lots of money. A lot of it can be used to criticize his opponents."
Joe Cunningham Show: "Between Mike Johnson, Clay Higgins, Steve Scalise, and Julie Letlow - the four GOP House members from Louisiana - Letlow is the least conservative... she barely has a record and has taken no real conservative stands on any major issues."
The Hayride: Is Letlow's entry a game-changer, in the sense that it knocks the other challengers out of the race? I don't see any reason to think so.
Conservative Review with Daniel Horowitz on X: "So stupid."
Former Rep. Mayra Flores on X: "If we want America First legislation to be passed, we need strong members of Congress with backbone - not watered-down Republicans. RINOs don't have my vote!"
Live From Studio 6B on X: "Letlow, in a deep South state like Louisiana, is of course the worst choice. She scored a whopping 62 on the Heritage Action scorecard for the 118th Congress. She's establishment on foreign aid, support for omnibus spending packages and other priorities not aligned with conservatives."
